Early Islamic manuscripts are vital to understanding the cultural and literary heritage of the many nations that embraced the early days of Islam. Originating from countries in the Middle East, North and West Africa, and other regions of Asia, these manuscripts are intriguing to scholars.

In many cases, some magnificent written works of Islamic heritage are unpublished, meaning there is either one or a few copies. This makes it extremely vital to ensure they survive, are studied, and safely preserved.

Our mission at the Quran Manuscript Studies Blog (QMSB) is to share studies and knowledge of Islamic history and culture with the growing body of people concerned with the handwritten transmission of the Quran. We also carefully follow Quranic collections and exhibitions and study various scribal practices. Another area that interests us is how the 19th/20th-century orientalists interpreted Quranic codices, and how these shaped the way we study Quranic manuscripts today

Unfortunately, despite the immense importance placed by Islamic tradition on the pursuit of knowledge, much emphasis wasn’t always placed on the preservation of its cultural and scientific written legacy. All this is changing at last! More people than ever before are aware of the significance of preserving and studying these works in depth.

Besides our huge body of research, we also give a platform to other scholars to share with our interested followers their intriguing projects and findings.

“The history of the Qur’anic text may be the subject of a debate, although in my view it is reflected in its handwritten transmission.”
