Inscription of ʿAbdallāh

نقش عبد الله

Ḥismā, north-western Arabia

  1. بسم الله أنا عبد الله
  2. كتبت هذا زمن ...
  3. عمير (عفير؟) من سنة
  4. ثلثين (ثلاثين)

In the name of God. I am ʿAbdallāh. I wrote this at the time … ʿUmayr [or ʿUfayr?], in the year thirty.

A dual-dated inscription: like Zuhayr’s (nos. 1–2), the scribe gives both an event connected with a man called ʿUmayr (or possibly ʿUfayr) and a numbered Hijri year, thirty. Only nos. 1–3 in this catalog are older. As in the earliest texts, ʿAbdallāh gives neither his father’s name nor a kunya, and adds no prayer. Weathering has affected the clarity of about two words. The word after “zaman” (“at the time”) at the end of line 2, which named the event, cannot be read with confidence and is left unread here; the editor also reads “zaman” itself with some hesitation, since its letters spread over more space than the word needs.
