Second Inscription of Yazīd ibn ʿAbdallāh al-Sulūlī

النقش الثاني ليزيد بن عبد الله السلولي

Wādī al-Khushaybah, Najrān region

  1. الهم (اللهم) اغفر ليزيد بن
  2. عبد اله (الله) السلولي

O God, forgive Yazīd ibn ʿAbdallāh al-Sulūlī.

A second, shorter text by Yazīd ibn ʿAbdallāh al-Sulūlī, cut near his inscription dated Jumādā 29 AH ( QMI-INS-003 ). This one asks for forgiveness rather than mercy and carries no date. Because it is by the same man, on the same rock face, and in the same early hand, it is placed here at about 29 AH; the date is an estimate.

The text repeats the archaic spelling of the divine name found in his dated inscription: al-hm for Allāhumma and ʿbd ālh for ʿAbd Allāh , without the doubled lām . The letter forms are those of the early Ḥijāzī hand: tall, upright alifs and lām s and a long horizontal baseline.
