I am Khālid ibn al-ʿĀṣ ibn Hishām ibn al- Mughīrah. I ask forgiveness of my Lord for all my sins.

A first-person prayer for forgiveness by Khālid ibn al-ʿĀṣ ibn Hishām ibn al-Mughīrah of Makhzūm, cut on a large boulder in the al-Bāḥah region among several other texts. He names himself with three generations of ancestors and asks forgiveness “for all my sins” ( li-dhanbī kullihi ). The names are written without the long alif ( khld , al-ʿṣ , hshm ), as is usual in the early Ḥijāzī hand, and al-Mughīrah is divided across the line end after the alif of the article.

Khālid is known from the biographical works. His father, al-ʿĀṣ ibn Hishām, fell at Badr fighting against the Muslims, and he was a nephew of Abū Jahl; he himself accepted Islam at the conquest of Mecca in 8 AH. ʿUmar appointed him governor of Mecca, and ʿUthmān appointed him again, and Ibn Ḥajar notes that he lived on into the caliphate of Muʿāwiyah ( al-Iṣābah ). The text carries no date, but the writer fixes it within his own life as a Muslim, c. 8–60 AH, and the upright, undotted Ḥijāzī hand agrees. His son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is named in a dated inscription of 40 AH near Mecca ( QMI-INS-005 ); the book from which this text is taken gathers further inscriptions of Khālid’s sons in the same region.
