I am Abū Muḥammad ʿAm- r ibn Rāfiʿ. I ask my Lord His good pleasure. [He] wrote [this] when five nights had passed of the month of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, of the year forty-fo[ur].
A rock inscription from the region of Tabūk, discovered and photographed by Saʿd al-Tuwayjirī, who published it on 27 January 2021; Muḥammad al-Mughadhdhawī and Aḥmad al-Aqṭash contributed to its reading. Its writer introduces himself by his kunyah and name, “I am Abū Muḥammad ʿAmr ibn Rāfiʿ”, and asks for a single thing: “I ask my Lord His good pleasure” (asʾalu rabbī riḍāhu). He then dates the text to the day: five nights into Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the year forty-four, that is, about 6 July 664 CE, in the caliphate of Muʿāwiyah.
