Inscription of Ḥakīm ibn ʿAlī

نقش حكيم بن علي

Wādī al-Khushanah, on Darb Zubaydah

  1. اللهم اغفر لحكيم
  2. بن علي بن هبيرة و
  3. كتب لسنة ثنتين وخمسين

O God, forgive Ḥakīm ibn ʿAlī ibn Hubayrah, and it was written in the year fifty-two.

Found by a survey expedition at Wādī al-Khushanah on Darb Zubaydah in 1997. Scholars have read the personal names in several different ways — "Ḥakīm" has also been proposed as Ḥudhaym, Judhaym, Ḥadabah or Hadiyyah, and "Hubayrah" as Hunaydah — since letters such as kāf/dāl and rāʾ/dāl are graphically similar in this undotted early hand. The inscription carries no diacritical dots at all.
