Inscription of Ibn Abī ʿArīḍ

نقش ابن أبي عريض

Wādī Abū ʿŪd

  1. عبد الله بن أبي عريض
  2. يعتصم بربه
  3. كتب في سنة ثلث وثمنين (ثمانين)
  4. ومحمد بن إبرهيم (إبراهيم)
  5. وكتب شهادته بيده

ʿAbdallāh ibn Abī ʿArīḍ takes refuge in his Lord. He wrote [this] in the year three and eighty, and Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm [too]. And he wrote his testimony with his own hand.

Lines 4–5 are written in a visibly different hand from lines 1–3, on the same rock along the Syrian pilgrim route. The book's author suggests a second person — a resident or traveler who read the original text and wanted to endorse it — added his own name afterward, appending "and he wrote his testimony with his own hand" specifically to confirm that no one wrote it on his behalf. This kind of secondary endorsement (taṣdīq) appears elsewhere among early Islamic rock inscriptions.
