O God, grant well-being to Rabāḥ ibn Ḥafṣ ibn ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb. I exhort [reverence for] God and kinship ties, and he wrote [this] in the year six and ninety.
"Rabāḥ" identifies himself as a great-grandson of the second caliph ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb. The book's author identifies him with ʿĪsā ibn Ḥafṣ ibn ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar al-ʿAdawī, a hadith narrator known by the kunyah Abū Ziyād and the nickname "Rabāḥ," credited with two hadiths (on shortening prayer while traveling, and on Medina's sacred boundary); historians differ on whether he died in 157 or 159 AH, agreeing only that he lived to about eighty. He left a second, much longer inscription elsewhere in this corpus (no. 54) using the same well-being formula.
