First Inscription of Umayyah ibn ʿAbd al-Malik
نقش أمية بن عبد الملك (الأول)
Wādī al-ʿUsaylah
- ومن يتوكل على الله فالله حسبه والله
- بالغ أمره وقد جعل الله لكل شي قدرا
- وكتب أمية بن عبد الملك
- لسنة ثمان وتسعين وهو يسل (يسأل) الله الجنة
“And whoever relies upon God — then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, God will accomplish His purpose. God has already set for everything a measure” [Q 65:3]. And Umayyah ibn ʿAbd al-Malik wrote [this], for the year eight and ninety, asking God for Paradise.
The first of two Qurʾanic inscriptions left at Wādī al-ʿUsaylah by the same Umayyah ibn ʿAbd al-Malik (compare no. 47), quoting Sūrat al-Ṭalāq (65:3) on trust in God. Left at the same site as the three inscriptions of ʿUthmān ibn Wahrān (nos. 25–27), eighteen years earlier.
