May God have mercy on al-Mufaḍḍal ibn al-Ṣalt. Amen, Lord of the worlds, Lord of Moses and Abraham. And [this] was written in the year ten and one hundred.
A prayer for mercy dated by year alone, 110 AH (728–729 CE), in the caliphate of Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik. After the regional opening “tarraḥḥama Allāh ʿalā” (compare nos. 3, 55d and the two inscriptions of al-Rammāḥ ibn al-Ṣalt, nos. 55y and 55z), the writer seals his prayer with “āmīn, Lord of the worlds, Lord of Moses and Abraham”. The closest parallel in this catalog is the prayer of Qaṣr al-Kharrānah (no. 40, 92 AH), which ends “āmīn, Lord of the worlds, Lord of Moses and Aaron”, the pairing of the Qurʾān (Q 7:122; 26:48). Here Abraham takes the place of Aaron, recalling instead the pairing of the “scrolls of Abraham and Moses” (Q 87:19; cf. 53:36–37). The spelling is of its time: “al-ʿālamīn” and “Ibrāhīm” are both written without their long alif. al-Mufaḍḍal shares his father’s name with al-Rammāḥ ibn al-Ṣalt, who wrote in the same region in 109 and 110 AH; the two may have been brothers, though this remains a possibility only.
