O God, forgive Nūḥ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mālik al-Duʾalī. And [this] was written in the year four-teen and one hundred.

A short prayer for forgiveness from the Medina region, dated 114 AH (732–733 CE), in the caliphate of Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik. It was published together with the prayer of Muḥammad ibn Kathīr, dated four years earlier, as the second of two texts from the same rocky ground ( QMI-INS-055ag ). The writer gives three generations, Nūḥ son of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān son of Mālik, and closes with the nisbah al-Duʾalī, which points to the Banū al-Duʾil of Kinānah, the clan of Abū al-Aswad al-Duʾalī.

The text follows the plain pattern of many Ḥijāzī prayers: the invocation Allāhumma ighfir , the name, and a dating clause introduced by wa-kataba fī sanat . The name Mālik is written without its long ā (ملك), the usual defective spelling of the period. The year is spelled out in words, as in nearly every dated text of the century. The nearest dated text in this catalog falls a year later: the inscription of Umm Salamah bint Hishām of 115 AH ( QMI-INS-055ae ).

The photograph shows the lines running across a broad face of dark stone, cut with a thin, scratched stroke and crossed by later marks. The reading is given here as published; the layout of the published reading in three lines does not necessarily follow the lines on the stone. A prayer of 130 AH from east of the city, by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Sulaymān, continues the dated series of the Medina region ( QMI-INS-055mb ).
