[I,] ʿUthmān ibn ʿUbayd[allāh], believe in God the Al- mighty, and … and [this] was written [in the year] twenty and one hundred.

A short declaration of faith from Rawāwah, written in the first person: “[I,] ʿUthmān ibn ʿUbaydallāh, believe in God the Almighty”, dated 120 AH (737–738 CE), in the caliphate of Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik. The surface is worn in lines 1, 3, 4 and 5, and the bracketed letters are restored by the editor. Other texts at Rawāwah and nearby give the writer's full lineage, ʿUthmān ibn ʿUbaydallāh ibn ʿAbdallāh ibn ʿUmar: a great-grandson of the caliph ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb through his son ʿAbdallāh.
