In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, the Merciful, the Com- passionate, Master of the Day of Judgement. You we worship and You we ask for help. Guide us on the straight path, the path of those whom You have blessed, not of those who incur wrath, nor of tho- se who go astray. And Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh wrote [this] on Tuesday in Rajab of the year one hundred and thirty. The mercy of God be on whoever reads this writing, and [God] curse whoever alters it. Amen.
A rock inscription carrying the whole of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, followed by the writer’s name and an exact date: Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh wrote it on a Tuesday in Rajab of the year 130 AH (March 748 CE), in the caliphate of Marwān ibn Muḥammad, the last Umayyad caliph, on the eve of the ʿAbbāsid revolution. Its documenter suggests that it may be the earliest dated complete text of al-Fātiḥah on stone. The text is laid out in long lines within incised frame lines on a dark boulder.
