Inscription of Khālid ibn Nuʿaym

نقش خالد بن نعيم

Taymāʾ, Tabūk

  1. اللهم اغفر لخلد (لخالد) ابن
  2. نعيم وكتب سنة ثنتين ومية (ومائة)

O God, forgive Khālid ibn Nuʿaym. And [this] was written in the year two and one hundred.

A short prayer for forgiveness dated by year alone, 102 AH (720–721 CE), in the caliphate of Yazīd II ibn ʿAbd al-Malik. It is the third inscription from Taymāʾ in this catalog, after the prayer for Qāsim (no. 50, 98 AH) and before the prayer of Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar for all the people of Taymāʾ (no. 55e, 108 AH), and it adds to the evidence that the oasis was a busy stop for Muslim travellers in the first decades of the second century AH. The spelling is of its time: “Khālid” is written without its long alif (خلد), and “miʾah” takes the form “miyah” (مية), as in other inscriptions of the period. The two lines are cut along the rock in a long, even band. Khālid ibn Nuʿaym is otherwise unknown.
