In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful. Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion, and He is over all things powerful [Q 67:1]. This is the grave of Fāṭimah, daughter of al-Ḥasan ibn […]. The mercy of God, His forgiveness and His good pleasure be upon him (sic). He (sic) died on Monday, the first day of Shaʿbān, in the year two and one hundred.

A sandstone gravestone from the cemetery of Aswān in Upper Egypt, dated Monday, 1 Shaʿbān 102 AH (4 February 721 CE). After the basmalah it opens with the first verse of Sūrat al-Mulk, “Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion, and He is over all things powerful” (Q 67:1), a fitting verse at a grave, since the next verse speaks of the One “who created death and life”. It then names the dead, Fāṭimah daughter of al-Ḥasan, whose grandfather’s name is lost, and asks God’s mercy, forgiveness and good pleasure for her.
