Basmalah. O Allah, have mercy on Ḥasan b. Maysarah and on his two parents and on their descendants. Amen, O Lord of Muḥammad and Ibrāhīm. O Allah, cause my deeds to be regarded an act of obligatory Jihād, and grant me martyrdom in thy path. Ḥasan wrote (it) on Tuesday 23 Rabīʿ I, and in it died Banū Ḥātim, may Allah have mercy on them all. It is in the year seventeen and one hundred.
An inscription from al-Naqab dated 117 AH (735–736 CE). The text is recorded in Sharon’s corpus, Plate 54, page 179. The inscription is a prayer for forgiveness and martyrdom by Ḥasan ibn Maysarah, asking God to forgive him and his two parents and to grant him martyrdom in His path. It also records the date of writing and the death of Banū Ḥātim on the same day. Several letters are uncertain in the published text, marked by the editor with (!) and (?). The reading follows Sharon’s corpus, pp. 179–180. The photograph is reproduced from the published plate at low resolution; it has been adjusted for contrast only, without retouching the carved letters.
