In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. This is what Ḥulays ibn Ḥikmah wrote, may God have mercy on him and forgive him. He wrote [it] on the road of the cistern (maṣnaʿiyyah), in the caliphate of ʿAbdallāh ibn Muḥammad. Witnessed by Muḥammad ibn Muḍarris and ʿĪsā ibn Yazīd, with four nights remaining of Ramaḍān, in the year one hundred and thirty-six.
On a rock face, Ḥulays ibn Ḥikmah carved a seven-line text in Ramaḍān 136 AH. It opens with the basmalah and the formula hādhā mā kataba, “this is what [he] wrote”, names the cistern (maṣnaʿiyyah) on the road (sābilah), dates the record by the caliphate of ʿAbdallāh ibn Muḥammad, names two witnesses, and closes with the day and the year: four nights before the end of Ramaḍān 136.
