O God, forgive … son of ʿAlī al-Kā…ī forgive … And he wrote in the year six and forty and one hundred.

A prayer for forgiveness dated 146 AH (763–764 CE). The inscription was recorded in 2018 by the Badia Epigraphic Survey, led by Ali Al-Manaser and Michael Macdonald, near al-Ruwayshid in the Jordanian panhandle, and published by Ilkka Lindstedt in 2024. Lindstedt notes that the reading of the content and of the writer’s name is uncertain, but that the text appears to be a standard early Islamic graffito asking for God’s forgiveness. Although lines 1–4 are rather effaced, the year in lines 5–7 is easy to read.
