QMI Organizes a Training Course on Arabic Paleography and Codicology


The Quran Manuscripts Initiative (QMI), dedicated to the preservation and study of Islamic manuscript heritage, has successfully concluded its “An Introduction to Arabic Paleography and Codicology” online training course. Held from March 25th to 27th, 2024, via Zoom, the program attracted a select group of Masters and PhD researchers, as well as professionals globally, keen on expanding their knowledge of Arabic manuscripts

Led by Professor Arianna D’Ottone Rambach, Associate Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at Sapienza University of Rome, the course offered an in-depth exploration of Arabic paleography and codicology. Participants explored the study of ancient Islamic manuscripts, focusing on their scripts, styles, material aspects, and the rich historical, cultural, and linguistic insights they yield.

Spread over three engaging days, from 9 AM to 5 PM CET, the course covered key aspects of Arabic codicology and paleography. It provided attendees with invaluable insights into manuscript production, including the materials used, writing supports, formats, and bookbinding techniques. Through detailed sessions on paleographic analysis, participants learned to recognize and date various Arabic handwriting styles, while practical applications and case studies demonstrated the skills’ real-world applications.


Course Highlights Included:

– A comprehensive overview of Arabic manuscript production, detailing materials, writing supports, and bookbinding techniques.
– In-depth paleographic analysis sessions, equipping participants to recognize and date different Arabic handwriting styles accurately.
– Engaging practical applications and case studies, allowing attendees to apply their knowledge in deciphering manuscripts and analyzing their notable features and characteristics.

Professor Arianna D’Ottone Rambach brought her extensive expertise to the forefront, enriching participants’ learning experiences with her knowledge in Arabic language, paleography, codicology, and numismatics. Her affiliations with esteemed institutions such as Sapienza University of Rome and the Académie Royale des Sciences d’Outre-Mer (Bruxelles) ensured high-caliber instruction and deep insights.

By the course’s end, participants had gained a solid foundational understanding of Arabic paleography and codicology, poised to advance their research and contribute to the Arabic written tradition’s cultural heritage.
